ABSTRACT
Chronic Central Pain Conditions: Integrating Polyvagal & Balanced Autonomic Approaches

OVERVIEW: Chronic pain syndromes -- often tied to “central sensitization” and dysautonomia -- are often difficult to clinically manage. This course will integrate concepts and strategies related to diagnosis and treatment of representative conditions in this spectrum of conditions.
COURSE BACKGROUND: Extrinsic afferent neurons play essential roles in both sensation and reflex control of visceral organs; they are also important in modulating autonomic and hormonal mechanisms affecting mood and health generally. Some of this vital information originates from mechanoreceptors located in various somatic and visceral tissues. Thoughtful modulation of such input is known to enhance heart rate variability (HRV) and may provide access to physiological functions important in optimizing health.
This PRESENTATION (and RELATED WORKSHOPS) will integrate effective classic osteopathic (OMT) techniques and patient advice with pertinent concepts from polyvagal theory (Porges) and the neurovisceral integration model (Thayer). The interventions proposed in this course are designed to provide a unified osteopathic working approach conveying a better understanding of how autonomic, attentional and affective systems interrelate with somatic and visceral inputs.
Based upon the evolving evidence base, the presentations seek to provide manual medicine physicians with new insights and osteopathic approaches to reduce pain and dysfunction while effectively promoting health and homeostasis.

Somato-Emotional Perspective in Osteopathy

Kursinhalt:
This course aims to build upon our already existing understanding of anatomy and physiology through a more complete perspective and rediscover what was always in front of our eyes and under our hands: emotion. The course will explore the duality of emotion and the somatic system in which it stores itself to form one integral, simultaneous, unconscious process.
Concepts of Gestalt Therapy for interviewing and treatment will be emphasized to understand the importance of keeping the patient in the present moment for healing to take place. Participants will be trained to identify stored emotions in the somatic system through recognition of body language, appropriate questioning and medical interviewing to diagnose and treat more efficiently, somatic tension and fascial distortion rooted in emotion, as well as experience an overall richer doctor-patient relationship. The overall objective is to provide a new paradigm for looking at the root cause of common medical pathologies and how they can be treated osteopathically.
The 5 human “Reichian characterologies”, as originally described by Reich and later Lowen and Pierrakos, will be emphasized as a road map to understand common strain patterns encountered in patients and the emotional basis for their existence. Specific ways to treat emotionally based strain patterns will be discussed and demonstrated with a focus on non-physical causes of pathology to create a general shift in perspective from pathophysiology to “treating the health”, as Dr. Still taught.

Course Objectives:
1. Understand specific physiologic mechanisms responsible for the interplay between emotions and the somatic system
2. Describe differences between the conscious and unconscious with examples that pertain to the somatic system
3. Comprehend basic concepts of Gestalt and be able to effectively use them during medical interview, diagnosis and treatment
4. Recognize the 5 characterologies in patients from both behavioral and structural perspectives
5. Perceive myofascial strain patterns characteristic of each characterology and develop appropriate treatment plans based on prioritization of the patient’s specific needs
6. Be able to relate the concepts of direct and indirect osteopathic techniques to psychotherapeutic strategies



Travis Gordon is the Director of Medical Education for International Studies in Yucatan, Mexico as well as Assistant Professor of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine for Michigan State University. He oversees all international projects and collaborations between MSU and Mexico.
As a native of Lansing, Michigan he graduated from Alma College in 2005 with a Bachelors in Science in Exercise and Health Science and a Bachelors in Art in Spanish. He completed a two-year service in Peace Corps Nicaragua from 2007-09 in Public Health and was awarded the International AIDS Day Award for outstanding initiatives in the field. He graduated from MSUCOM in 2013, earning the Fred Mitchell, Sr. Award for his work in OMM, and later completed a residency at Adventist Health East Orlando in Orlando, Florida with specialties in family medicine and neuromusculoskeletal medicine.
In 2023 he completed a Masters in Humanistic Psychotherapy from the Instituto Universitario Carl Rogers in Yucatan, Mexico. Here he was able to broaden his perspective of osteopathy by involving the concept of emotion as a principal cause of somatic tension and human pathology in general. He has lectured and given workshops in various parts of Mexico, as well as at the AAO Convocation. He plans to dedicate his career to bridging the knowledge gap between psychology and osteopathy in their respective mind-body approaches as well as modern advances in quantum physics to understand what Dr. AT Still meant by his concept of Body, Mind, Spirit.

Kursinhalt:
Der Becker-Kurs Level 2 vertieft zunächst die Palpation-Qualitaten und erweitert sie. Zusatzlich zur klassischen Becker-Technik arbeiten wir dann auch mit einer besonderen Form der non-verbalen Hypnose, der multisensorischen Hypnose. Uber die Gewebe-Hypnose erha¨lt der Therapeut zusätzliche Informationen uber den Kontext der somatischen Dysfunktion. Das therapeutische Spektrum wird dadurch deutlich erweitert. Die Teilnahme wird frühestens zwei Jahre nach Erhalt des Diploms empfohlen.

Der Kurs ist sowohl als Aufbaukurs, als auch als Postgraduiertenkurs belegbar. Darauf aufbauend wird ein CMD II Aufbaukurs fussend auf den Basiskurs als Postgraduiertenkurs angeboten.
Das Kiefergelenk und seine Funktion sind von grosser Bedeutung für die Integrität unseres Körpers. Es soll in diesem Kurs von seiner anatomischen und neurophysiologischen Seite betrachtet werden.

Vermittelte Inhalte:
Allg. Kenntnisse zum Kiefergelenk, der Mund- und Kaumuskultur (einschl. Dysfunktionen), neuroanatomische und neurophysiologische Zusammenhänge, Diagnostik und osteopathisch manuelle Therapie des Kiefergelenks und seiner Muskulatur.
